Dr Adel Quttainah: The Art of Becoming

The art of becoming
From multicultural roots to an international medical career, the surgeon and entrepreneur shaping his own world of medicine, history and design
From the operating theatre to the preservation of medical history

Some careers follow a straight line. Others evolve through curiosity, unexpected turns and the courage to build something beyond the original ambition.
Dr Adel Quttainah’s story belongs to the latter. A plastic and reconstructive surgeon, entrepreneur and passionate collector, his world extends from the operating theatre to the preservation of medical history, shaped by an international upbringing and a career spanning continents.
Where it all began
Born to a Kuwaiti father and a Danish mother, Dr Quttainah grew up between two cultures, bringing together Arab heritage and European influences. The second of three children, he recalls a happy childhood and an early interest in learning.

Engineering was initially among the possibilities for his future, influenced by his father’s interests, before medicine became the path he ultimately pursued. It was a decision that would take him far beyond his childhood surroundings and introduce him to a profession demanding both exceptional precision and a deep understanding of the human form.
The making of a surgeon
In 1993, Dr Quttainah graduated in medicine from University College Cork in Ireland. His journey then took him to Canada, where he completed plastic surgery residency training at McMaster University, followed by advanced training at the University of Toronto, including microsurgery and breast reconstruction.
His education also brought him to Brazil, where he worked as a visiting surgeon with the renowned plastic surgeon Ivo Pitanguy.
Ireland, Canada and Brazil each formed part of a wider professional education, building the expertise and international perspective that would later inform his work in the Middle East.
Building a vision
After working in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Dr Quttainah established his own cosmetic surgery practice in Kuwait in 2006. His ambitions gradually extended beyond an individual surgical practice into the development of a wider medical enterprise.
In 2012, he established Quttainah Medical Center in Kuwait. Further expansion followed, including additional facilities in Kuwait, the opening of Quttainah Specialized Hospital in Dubai in 2021, and a medical centre in Qatar in 2022.
Today, his professional world brings together specialist surgery, medical entrepreneurship and the development of healthcare facilities across the Gulf.
The evolution from surgeon to founder marks an important part of his story: the desire not only to practise his profession, but to build an environment in which specialist care could grow.

The art behind the science
For Dr Quttainah, medicine exists alongside a longstanding fascination with aesthetics, craftsmanship and history.
Plastic surgery requires an intricate balance of technical expertise, anatomy and an understanding of proportion. Yet his interests extend beyond contemporary practice, reaching back into the history of the profession itself.
An encounter with an antique medical instrument during his student years in Ireland sparked a passion for collecting. What began as curiosity developed into a substantial collection of historical medical objects, offering a tangible connection to the generations of practitioners who shaped modern medicine.
There is something particularly compelling about a surgeon preserving the tools of those who came before him.
A legacy preserved
In 2017, Dr Quttainah decided to share his collection publicly through a medical museum in Kuwait.
The collection reflects a different side of the surgeon: one fascinated not only by what medicine can achieve today, but by how it arrived here. Historic instruments reveal changing techniques, evolving knowledge and the ingenuity that has driven medical progress.

Beyond medicine
Automobiles, design and hospitality
Away from the operating theatre, Dr Quttainah’s interests extend into automobiles, design and hospitality, including his Medusa Café venture.
These pursuits offer another perspective on a man whose professional identity is rooted in medicine but whose curiosity reaches into different worlds. Whether exploring a historic instrument, an automobile or a thoughtfully designed space, craftsmanship and attention to detail provide a common thread.
They are different expressions of an interest in how things are made, how they function and how they are experienced.
What remains
Today, Dr Adel Quttainah’s journey encompasses international medical training, surgical practice, entrepreneurship and the preservation of medical heritage.
From his multicultural beginnings to his work across the Gulf, his story has evolved through several distinct stages: student, surgeon, founder and collector.
Each represents a different achievement, yet together they reveal a broader ambition — to contribute not only through his own professional practice, but through institutions, knowledge and interests that extend beyond it.
Because a legacy is rarely defined by one achievement alone. It is built through the work we do, the knowledge we preserve and the things we choose to leave behind.
Dr Adel Quttainah — a life shaped by medicine, guided by curiosity and continually evolving beyond the expected.
