Treatment of the month review: The Sciton BBL HEROic BBL Light Therapy Treatment

Nina Bal is a cosmetic dental surgeon and advanced facial aesthetics clinician based in London who has been specialising and practising facial aesthetic enhancements for over 12 years.

Known for her facial sculpting and full-face holistic assessment and treatments that can literally wipe decades off her clients’ faces, she is a firm in the “less is more” philosophy and has just launched her first product from her upcoming skincare line.

A woman with shoulder-length dark hair poses against a light background. Wearing a black blazer over a black top, she exudes confidence and composure—qualities often associated with those seeking advanced treatments like Sciton BBL for radiant skin.

Keen to know what I could do to improve the look of open pores and areas of pigmentation, I was excited to meet her and hear her recommendations.

As well as a series of gentle ‘tweakments, including microneedling, Dr Nina’s first step was to recommend a non-invasive but highly effective light therapy treatment to help refine skin texture and is beloved by celebrities including Lindsay Lohan and Victoria Beckham.

How it works

The Sciton BBL HEROic is an advanced BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy that works to rejuvenate skin, quickly, comfortably and effectively and can be used on the face and body.

My therapist at Dr Nina’s London clinic, Grace Buckhurst, explained that, although it has similar properties to laser, the BBL therapy actually uses intense pulses of light on the skin, gently heating up the upper layers to stimulate fibroblasts, increasing the natural repair process and boosting collagen production.

She explained that, unlike some more invasive laser treatments, there is no significant downtime, and it can be used for deep wrinkles, scarring, as well as to refine pores and improve areas of pigmentation.

What I thought

First, Grace gave my skin a thorough cleanse and took a good look at my areas of concern. The BBL HEROic is also suitable for improving redness and vascular lesions, which can often be a result of sun damage, something I’ve become aware of over the years.

A woman in black scrubs stands next to a patient lying on a treatment bed in a modern clinic, preparing for a facial procedure using the Sciton BBL device with touchscreen beside them. The setup is clean and professional.
A woman in a leopard-print top lies on a treatment bed with her eyes closed. A skincare professional in black scrubs and a face mask gently massages her face during Sciton BBL Light Therapy, with beauty equipment and products visible.

Applying the goggles to protect my eyes from the bright lights, Grace explained that most clients describe the feeling of the treatment as having a rubber band gently ping over the skin.

I did feel that sensation as she gradually worked over my skin with the handpiece, and my skin became warmer as she progressed, but once I had got used to it, I found it quite comfortable.

The Sapphire Cooling tip helps to calm and cool your skin as the treatment goes along.

The Intelligent Control element of the machine means the treatment can be spoken to the client, and Grace took around 40 minutes to work over my face and neck, finishing with a replenishing moisturiser to work with collagen production and an all-important SPF.

Treatment expectation

A woman with shoulder-length blonde hair and a leopard-print top sits in a room while someone uses an iPad with an attached Sciton BBL device to take her photo. The iPad screen shows her face, and beige curtains cover the windows behind her.

Looking in the mirror, although my face and neck looked a little pink, my skin looked firmer and smoother than when I’d walked in, and five days on, I have definitely noticed a real difference in pore size.

I’ve always had to resort to using an anti-redness stick around my nose and under makeup, but I’m pleased to say the capillaries around my nose have begun to fade too, and I’m looking forward to completing my course of five treatments to ultimate results.

A course of the Sciton HEROic BBL treatment is recommended, price £670 per treatment.
