When Elysium Lifestyle editor and all-round beauty expert, Sue Moxley, invited me to write about exosomes, I didn’t hesitate. Beauty is where my editorial career began, and my fondness for a well-judged tweakment is hardly a secret.
Over the years, I’ve tried and thoroughly tested just about every trend worth talking about. But exosomes? That’s one bandwagon I’ve yet to jump on.
So what exactly is all the fuss about?
Step forward, my own trusted aesthetician.

Karen Kelly is an NHS Nurse Specialist with more than 25 years’ experience, including 15 years in medical aesthetics. A multi-award-winning practitioner, accredited by leading professional bodies, including Save Face, she treats a loyal client base across London, Essex, and East Sussex, where she runs two clinics. Her approach blends clinical precision with a warmth that instantly puts patients at ease.
In other words: safe hands.
So Karen, What Exactly Are Exosomes?
“Exosomes are tiny messengers released by cells,” Karen explains.
“They carry instructions from one cell to another, telling skin cells how to repair, regenerate and function more effectively. Ultimately, their job is communication.”
In aesthetics, practitioners use lab-derived exosomes, safe, consistent and free from live cells or donor tissue. They’re rich in growth factors, proteins, peptides, lipids and genetic signals such as RNA (spell out and use acronym if mentioned again), all essential for skin repair.
Once introduced into the skin, exosomes send signals that stimulate collagen and elastin production, encourage cellular renewal, and regulate inflammation.
What they don’t do is lift, freeze or artificially plump. They’re also technically non-injectable, a major plus for the needle-wary.
This is regenerative medicine, not traditional tweakment territory.
What’s the Promise? How Many Years Can I Knock Off my age?
If anything needs tweaking here, it’s expectations.

Exosomes aren’t about dramatic, overnight transformation, and that’s precisely their appeal.
The promise is healthier, better-functioning skin.
Patients typically report:
- Brighter tone
- Smoother texture
- Improved firmness
- Calmer, more balanced skin
As collagen production increases, fine lines soften gradually. Skin doesn’t look “done”; it simply looks better behaved.
“People often say they look really well rather than obviously treated,” Karen notes. “And that’s exactly where modern aesthetics should be heading.”
Subtle. Intelligent. Undetectable.
How Are They Administered?
Exosomes aren’t injected like fillers or anti-wrinkle treatments. Instead, they’re applied after controlled micro-injury, allowing them to penetrate deeply.

This is usually achieved via:
- Microneedling
- Radiofrequency microneedling
- Laser treatments
They’re most commonly used on the face, but also the neck, décolletage and even the scalp.
Be honest, is it painful?
Thankfully, no heroics required.
The exosomes themselves aren’t painful; any sensation comes from the delivery method. Most patients describe it as warm or slightly scratchy but entirely manageable.
Can I Do It in My Lunch Break?
In many cases, yes.
Post-treatment skin may look pink or mildly flushed, think light sun exposure. This typically settles within 24–48 hours, often sooner. There’s no bruising and no tell-tale signs of “having work done”.
Many patients head straight back to work or return the next day without raising eyebrows.
Exosome Treatment Aftercare: The Unsexy but Essential Bit
Aftercare is simple but important:

What to do:
- Use gentle cleansers
- Apply barrier-repair moisturisers
- Wear SPF diligently
What to avoid for 24–48 hours:
- Makeup
- Alcohol
- Intense exercise
- Saunas
What to avoid for 5–7 days:
- Retinoids
- Acids
- Active skincare ingredients
Protecting your skin post-treatment protects your results.
How Many Sessions With Exosomes Are Needed?
Some patients notice an early glow within 7–10 days, but exosomes work cumulatively.
For optimal results, expect:
- 2–3 sessions
- Spaced 4–6 weeks apart
Many then incorporate maintenance treatments into a longer-term skin health plan.
This is steady, strategic regeneration and not a quick fix.
And the Investment?
In the UK, treatments typically range from £300 to £800 per session, depending on:
- Exosome quality
- Delivery method
- Clinic expertise
If it sounds suspiciously cheap, ask questions. Sourcing and regulation matter enormously.
Is It for Everyone?
Generally Exosomes are well tolerated, but this is not universal.
Exosomes aren’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and certain autoimmune conditions or active infections may preclude treatment. A thorough consultation is essential.
Aesthetic medicine is never one-size-fits-all, and any reputable practitioner will insist on that conversation first.
Before You Take the Plunge
DO:
- Check your practitioner’s credentials
- Choose a medically trained aesthetic professional
- Look for accreditation (Save Face and similar bodies)
- Ask where the exosomes are sourced and how they’re regulated
DON’T:
- Jump on trends without understanding the science
- Assume “natural” means risk-free
- Skimp on aftercare
- Book treatments purely because they looked good on social media

Exosomes: The Celebrity Skin Secret?
Rumour has it that exosomes have quietly found their way into a number of A-lister routines. Whispers suggest admirers may include Gwyneth Paltrow, Hannah Waddingham, Sienna Miller and Kourtney Kardashian.
And honestly? We can tell….
Let’s “face it” – yes, I went there. These starlets always seem to look effortlessly red-carpet ready, even when the paps “just happen” to spot them pushing a trolley around their local supermarket.
Coincidence? Possibly.
Good skin strategy? Almost certainly.
