If you are a dedicated follower of fashion, you may well have noticed that the Autumn/Winter 2026 runway has ushered in the return of the brooch. Designers such as Armani and Ralph Lauren have fully embraced this once rather old-fashioned accessory, and, as ever, the high street has been quick to follow their lead.
All that glistens…
I can remember being a child and rummaging through my mum’s jewellery box, coming across these wonderfully intricate, sparkling pins that would only ever make an appearance on the most special of occasions. There was something about them that felt both glamorous and ever so grown-up.
More than a fashion statement…
Historically, brooches have carried a great deal of meaning. During the Victorian era in particular, their designs were often rich in symbolism, used to express mourning, affection or friendship. Pieces were adorned with motifs such as onyx, knots, hearts and clasped hands, each detail telling its own quiet story….
Twinsets VS trend set…
For years, brooches were typecast, seen as the jewellery of choice for older types, think grandmothers, great grandmothers and mad Aunt Flo….
Then the 1980s crashed in loud, flashy, and with zero subtlety. Suddenly, George Michael and Madonna (amongst others) said brooches were cool again, and we all turned into magpies, raiding our elders’ jewellery boxes and pinning on anything that sparkled.
It’s fair to say that while the brooch has always been around, it hasn’t always felt current.
For 2026, though, that perception has shifted. Reimagined as a versatile, stylish accessory, in fact, it’s a true multitasker, perfect for securing a pashmina, elevating a neckline, or adding a touch of personality and flair to any outfit.
