If you’re one of the many women jetting off in search of sunshine, sea, and a break from the UK’s ever-persistent drizzle, don’t forget to plan ahead, not just for your outfits and sun cream, but for your HRT routine too.
As a Menopause Coach and Counsellor, I’ve supported hundreds of women navigating everything from airport anxiety to night sweats in the tropics. One thing is clear: when your body’s going through hormonal shifts, even a holiday needs a strategy.
Whether you’re using patches, gels, sprays, or tablets, here’s how to take your HRT on holiday, without stress, leakage, or last-minute panic at the baggage check.
1. Keep It Official: Travel with Your Prescription
Always carry your HRT in its original packaging, ideally in your hand luggage. Bring a copy of your prescription too, just in case you’re questioned at security or need a replacement abroad. This is particularly important for destinations with stricter customs regulations.

2. Watch the Heat
HRT doesn’t love heatwaves as much as we do.
- Patches must be kept below 25°C, so avoid stashing them in a hot suitcase or glove compartment. Use your carry-on and store them somewhere cool once you arrive.
- Gels and sprays are slightly more stable, but still prefer room temperature. Thankfully, most are under 100ml, so you can keep them with you in your cabin bag.
Menopause Coach Tip: A mini insulated pouch with a reusable cool pack is a smart investment, especially if your destination is sweltering.
3. Pool Days & Patch Drama
Sun cream, chlorine, saunas, jacuzzis, all of these can affect how well your transdermal HRT (like patches or gels) is absorbed or how well it sticks. To help prevent irritation or loss of effectiveness, apply your HRT at least 60 minutes before sun exposure or swimming.
4. Mind the Time Zone

Crossing time zones? Don’t let your hormones go rogue.
Adjust your HRT schedule based on your destination’s time zone. Missing or delaying a dose—especially with oral contraceptives or combined therapies—can trigger unwanted bleeding or return of symptoms.
Use a travel-friendly reminder app or alarm to help you stay on track, even if you’re hopping between time zones or lounging poolside with no sense of time.
5. Check Destination Rules for Medication
Some countries have stricter controls around medicines, especially those used “off-label” like testosterone. In the UK, testosterone is a controlled drug, and different rules may apply overseas.
To avoid issues at customs, check the NHS guidance before you travel.
6. Embrace the Break (and Keep Your Routine Gentle)
While you’re away, give your body the rest, hydration, and nourishment it deserves. Don’t let a small lapse in routine undo the balance you’ve worked so hard to find. Even on holiday, your health is still a priority—and your hormones will thank you for staying consistent.

You’ve earned this holiday. A little forward planning and a cool pouch in your hand luggage, you can travel confidently, knowing your HRT will continue to support you—even while you’re sipping mojitos at sunset.
So pack your bags, protect your patches, and enjoy every moment of sunshine. You’ve got this.
