If you ask me, men get enough attention as it is, so I’d definitely recommend ignoring Valentine’s Day, which can enhance feelings of loneliness, and instead, celebrate Galantine’s Day, something much more wholesome. It might be a made up thing (thanks Parks and Recreation!) but that doesn’t mean it isn’t actually worth paying attention to.
Taking a day to be grateful for the amazing female friendships in our lives is, in my opinion, way more important than heart-shaped balloons and a bunch of flowers (most likely grabbed from the garage on the way home!). There is nothing quite like women-supporting-women, or any friendships of this nature – the ones that get you through the tough days. The ones that pick you up when you’re down or let you know you’re not alone in your work/parenting/caring struggles.

There are tons of ways to celebrate Galantine’s Day, but my favourite, as a romance writer and reader, is to organise a reading retreat.
What is a reading retreat?
IIf you’ve never heard of one before, a reading retreat is a bit like a spa break or a night away with the girls, only from the comfort of your own home and with much less make-up.
If you’d like to host one, you’ll need:
- Prosecco
- Face masks
- Snacks
- Blankets and cushions
- Chilled music
- Candles
- Optional matching PJs

What happens during a reading retreat?
Everyone brings their book, or you can arrange a book swap if people are looking for a new read, and once everyone is in and settled, light the candles and just…relax!
If you want you can have designated bursts of reading, or you can just let the evening unfold. It’s entirely up to you!
I can’t guarantee how much reading you’ll actually get done, but for me, it’s one of my favourite ways of celebrating the friendships that add so much to life. Give it a try!
