Now, I’m a girl who likes a bath. But more and more hotels are substituting their bathtubs for Rainfall showers, so it’s becoming increasingly challenging to find a modern boutique hotel with both.

Those of you who know me as Garden-Girl won’t be surprised to find my husband & I like to take short breaks in the UK to visit gardens.

And I have very strict criteria when searching for boutique hotels:

  • A bath, preferably rolltop, for me
  • A rainfall shower for him
  • A huge bed, feather pillows
  • Neutral colours and natural fibres
  • Old building, new Take.
  • Cosy restaurant serving food, cooked with local, seasonal produce
  • Small snug, preferably with log fire
  • The fewer rooms the better
  • Personal and friendly service

Tudor Farmhouse ticks all these boxes

Situated in the small hamlet of Clearwell, but within half an hour’s drive of Monmouth and Ross on Wye, Tudor Farmhouse is a perfect base from which to explore some of the most picturesque scenery of the UK. We chose dinner, bed & breakfast on both stays, but the hotel offers special themed experiences throughout the year, such as Stargazing Safari or Foraging Trips. They also have the shi-shiest Shepherd’s Hut for Treatments, from Luxury Facial to Full Body Massage.

a modern bathroom at tudor farmhouse hotel features a freestanding gray bathtub on dark slate tile flooring. a towel rests on its edge, with a glass enclosed shower and gray subway tiles in the background. natural light streams through white shutters.

The building itself a gorgeously lopsided old farmhouse, as the name suggests, with winding, wooden staircases and sloping floors. The suites are small but perfectly formed, with every amenity, from waffle cotton bathrobes to Nespresso coffee machine and minibar fridge. The food is delicious, restaurant service attentive but unintrusive, whether intimate dinner or bright breakfast.

a rustic room at tudor farmhouse hotel features rough wooden walls and a barn style door, partly open to reveal shelves of books. a large monstera and a smaller plant sit by the window, while natural light brightens the cozy, inviting space.

We had never visited the Forest of Dean before, so the staff, all from the local area, were happy to make recommendations. A short walk from the hotel, you can explore the subterranean world of Clearwell Caves. And there is plenty of countryside to explore. A visit to Symonds Yat Tor, to view the Wye Valley below, is one of the most breath-taking views I’ve experienced, a haven of natural beauty.

a cozy bedroom at the tudor farmhouse features a dark wood four poster bed with white bedding, two animal print pillows, and a gray throw. a nightstand with a rotary phone sits beside the bed, while framed art adorns the neutral colored wall.

We’ve been married for centuries, but you couldn’t fail to feel romantic in this charming hideaway. And very competitively priced too, which doesn’t hurt!
