The merry month of May, it’s Flower Show Season at last! One automatically thinks of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, of course. But there is another special event in the gardening calendar that should not be missed: The Royal Windsor Flower Show.
Organised by the Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Society, The Royal Windsor Flower Show takes place in Windsor Great Park on Saturday, 6th June. There is something so quintessentially British about a flower show, and this one in particular has deep royal connections. The Society, founded by Queen Victoria in 1892, and one of the oldest horticultural societies in Britain, was originally a local rose show. These days, The Royal Windsor Rose & Horticultural Society, whose current patron is His Majesty, King Charles, is a dynamic, fun and inclusive charity run by a team of passionate volunteers. The society’s charitable objectives are to inspire interest and provide support for educational activities in gardening, nature, cookery and crafts for young people within the community. These objectives are increasingly relevant in today’s screen-focused, fast-paced world.

In recent years, the Flower Show has evolved into a premier event, featuring entertaining talks, floral demonstrations, delicious foods, crafts and of course, plants.
One of the show’s most popular features is the Talks Tent. Throughout the day, horticultural experts will cover topics on gardening, garden design, bio-dynamic farming, wine and floristry, plus plenty of opportunities to pick up tips, insights and inspiration to take home.
TV personalities, Alex Jones and Angelica Bell, will be there on the day, as will Alan Titchmarsh, who is Honorary President of the Royal Windsor Flower Show.

Simon Lycett, one of the UK’s most renowned florists, celebrated for his lavish, bespoke creations for the Royal Households, will be demonstrating the art of flower arranging.
Pioneers of low-carb living, Katie & Giancarlo Caldesi share their experiences and recipes, along with wine expert Oz Clarke.
At the centre of this year’s Windsor Flower Show is a very special show garden. For the first time, the central show garden has been designed and created by Sophie, HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh, in collaboration with Alan Williams of Landform Consultants. Her Royal Highness is dedicated to advocating career opportunities for young people in the British food industry. Championing sustainable food production and forging the connection between the food we eat and where it comes from has never been more relevant. It’s no surprise, then, that The Plants with Purpose Garden highlights the importance of healthy soil and demonstrates how food is grown.

Sophie took her inspiration from memories of her formative years, growing up in Kent, so-called the Garden of England. As a child, she would eat apples straight from the tree, and as a teenager, she would regularly go fruit picking at the local farm. Her show garden is themed around productive planting, full of fruit trees and berry-laden shrubs, aromatic and culinary herbs and perennial vegetables. Edible planting will mingle seamlessly with self-seeding wildflowers. Sustainability is at the core of this garden, making it eco-friendly, not only for us humans, but for birds, bees and pollinating insects. A fallen tree is repurposed into a central table, for family and community to gather. Her Royal Highness is right on point with this garden, as it encompasses all the key elements of biodiversity that are so vital to the future health of our planet.

After the show, the garden will live on; its plants and materials will be up-cycled into schools piloting the new Nature Studies Programme, funded by the proceeds from the Royal Windsor Flower Show.

Recommended attire includes comfortable shoes and perhaps a floral dress. Or maybe take inspiration from the Duchess herself, seen sporting a pastel trench coat and matching wide-leg trousers at the Chelsea Flower Show. Above all, be sure to purchase a parking space in advance, because you are bound to buy plants and edible goodies on the day.
